A Day in the LIfe...Antigua

Posted by Jamie Scarbrough on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, In : Stowaway Stories

And so our initial thoughts of optimism and excitement on Antigua would not be let down.  On our sail to Falmouth Harbor we stumbled across a two parallel 2-mile long reefs, half a mile offshore.  We anchored in between the two reefs, stopped for lunch, and enjoyed one of the best snorkeling stops of the month.  This was the typical serendipitous lunch-stop down here in the islands.

We then made our way to Falmouth Harbor for Saturday night festivities.  With four social men onboard it wa...

Moonset to Sunset – A 13-hour sail of a lifetime

Posted by Jamie Scarbrough on Friday, May 13, 2011, In : Stowaway Stories

After a restless night sleeping under the stars, I awoke the others on the first shift at 2 am.  While Henry prepared breakfast, el Capitán and I pulled up anchor by 2:30 am.  The full moon was only days away, and as the moon set toward the horizon it began to peek out from the scattered clouds.

As we sailed out past all obstacles of land toward the open ocean, the moon finally set.  Although dawn approached, it got darker first.  We sailed all by feel.  Every once in a while the waves w...

The Adventures of Bone

Prehistoric Volcano - Nevis – Sunshine’s and the Infamous Bone – Waxing Moon and 13 hours to Antigua –

And so we left St. Barth’s in a state of awe.  Some of us still reeling with joy, some of us still recovering.  As we neared the oft-overlooked Dutch island of Statia, we sailed into a large pod of breaching tuna. We altered our heading slightly to get a better look and try and get a bite. At first we saw a few, as we sailed closer we saw dozens.  Unfortunately the cold stre...

The Burning of Vaval

Post-Heineken Regatta – Prior’s Arrival – Setting off from St. Martin – Passage to St. Barth's – Ile Fourchue – Vaval – The Riviera of the Caribbean

After extensive provisioning and late night parties, with a large tab at the local Budget Marine to boot, our new crew pulled Polaris’ anchor from St. Martin’s safe albeit busy harbor, the Simpson Bay Lagoon, and set off for Marigot to clear customs.  We zipped to shore in the Little Dipper’s new and improved, sexy 15 h...

Photos are worth a thousand words so check out pictures from the last few islands we have visited:

St. John
Jost Van Dyke
Tortola
Virgin Gorda

More tales to come including meeting Richard Branson's personal assistant and kiteboarding instructor, fighting a 100+ pound swordfish and ending up with just an eye, homemade conch fritters, and more...

Since our last post we continued to explore Vieques, with a highlight of making a night mission to check out a bio-luminescent bay. It was AMAZING and one of the few places in the world where this natural phenomenon occurs on a regular basis. As we swam through the pitch-black water, every movement of our limbs and bodies spurred explosions of phosphorescent light. Meanwhile the melodic sonar pings of a nearby dolphin pod electrified the depths beneath us. Pretty magical...

January 30, 2011

To date we have explored Puerto Rico, the spanish Virgin Islands (Culebra and Vieques), and St. Thomas. We circumnavigated St. Thomas and checked out Red Hook, Charlotte Amalie, Magens Bay, and Hull Bay. Magens Bay is an incredibly well protected harbor/bay on the North Side of St. Thomas and proved to be a difficult entrance as we had less than 3 feet under the keel for most of the entrance. We were one of two boats in the bay and the tourists cleared out around dusk- just in time for an ex...

Finally the first post from the Caribbean... We spent the last two weeks in a cycle.  Step 1: Rip apart the boat, Step 2: complete a project,  Step 3: reorganize the boat, Step 4: Repeat.  We worked around the clock to finish the following projects: remove unused wires and hoses and non functioning appliances (tv and microwave were from the paleozoic era), rewire entire boat, secure propane fuel lines, replace fire extinguishers, replace 9 seacocks, clean out and organize stearage comp...

Harwich Port, MA (42 N° 40', 70 W° 4') - Today was a very successful day. Kitenaked.com just hooked us up with two demo kites! They loaned us a 12 meter Wainman and a 7 meter Wainman.  We are looking forward to getting some sick pics/videos of these kites in action while in paradise as well as letting other kiters demo the gear so if you are in the Caribbean come find us!

We also finished the final prep for the trip: fishing reels are cleaned and ready to go, charts are organized, GP...

San Francisco, CA (37° 37' N, 122° 23'W) - After two very busy days inspecting, sea trialing, and negotiating, I closed on the purchase and am the proud owner of Polaris. She sailed well in 10-12 knots of breeze, and the engine, rigging, and sails are in excellent condition. As with any used boat purchase, there is plenty of work to be done to restore her back to glory. With less than a month before go-time, we seek to install several new through-hull fittings, upgrade the electronics, rev...

San Francisco, CA (37° 37' N  122° 23' W): Reading through the quartermaster's "gear list of doom" in preparation for the trip to Puerto Rico this week. The list is 531 lines long in Excel and includes all of the essential gear (anchor and rode, backup fuel filters, docklines, handheld GPS, binoculars, extra winch handles, etc). It also contains some hidden gems...my favorite items so far are #47, #238, and #396 which represent: "Way to open coconuts (machete would be good, hac...

San Francisco, CA (37° 37' N  122° 23' W): I am working my way through The Cruiser's Handbook of Fishing so that we can land a big one and enjoy 100lbs of sushi. When discussing medium to large offshore lures, the book gives the following advice: "If you pull something like this behind your boat while offshore in many areas from the equator to temperate seas, you will eventually hook a billfish, sometimes several in one day...So we repeat our warning: do not purchase and put something...

San Francisco, CA (37° 37' N  122° 23' W): The first post will be short and sweet.  I’m heading down to Puerto Rico to scope out Polaris in one week…hope she looks as good in person as she does in pictures. Only 35 days, 6 hours, and 12 seconds left to find the perfect kite locations on Google Earth…
